Salburua
Climb at Urban Boulder and take the chance to discover the Salburua wetlands, a short walk from our gym.
An extraordinary natural space
The Salburua wetlands are part of Vitoria-Gasteiz's Green Belt. At their heart are two main lagoons, the Arcaute and Betoño ponds, plus two small pools: Duranzarra and Larregana.
The ponds are fed by groundwater from the Vitoria-Gasteiz aquifer and, as well as their great ecological value, they help reduce flooding in the city by storing excess water.
Among the lagoons, wet meadows and woodland live waterbirds and unique species such as the European mink and the agile frog, both at serious risk of extinction and emblems of this wetland.
What to see

Ataria website ↗At the Arcaute pond you'll find the Los Fresnos and Las Zumas hides. With the naked eye you'll see storks, herons or coots; with binoculars, kingfishers, goldfinches or green woodpeckers.
A herd of deer, introduced to manage the vegetation, grazes in the meadows around Arcaute. With a bit of luck you'll see them up close; sightings aren't guaranteed.
Paths and tracks surround the lagoons and connect Betoño, Duranzarra, Arcaute and Larregana. Explore at your own pace, on foot or by bike.
In winter more birds gather; during the spring and autumn migrations species diversity increases, and in spring courtship and chicks stand out. At Betoño there's a heron breeding colony.
The Arcaute woodland, known as «el Montecito», preserves flora typical of oak forests, including very rare species.
